Eating enough when you are not hungry
A lot of lifters trying to gain muscle struggle with one thing: eating enough. If you are not naturally hungry, you need to make eating easier, not force bigger meals through willpower alone.
Add an extra meal or snack rather than trying to triple your plate size at dinner. Liquid calories (shakes, smoothies, milk) go down easier than solid food when you are full.
Calorie-dense options
- Nut butters, nuts, and trail mix.
- Olive oil drizzled on meals.
- Dried fruit and granola.
- Whole milk and full-fat yogurt.
- Rice, pasta, and bread as easy carb volume.
Protein distribution
Spread your protein target across 3-5 meals rather than front- or back-loading it. This gives your muscles a steady supply of amino acids through the day, which matters more for growth than hitting one huge protein meal.
When the scale will not move
- Weigh yourself 3-4 times a week and track the weekly average, not single days.
- If your average has not moved in 2 weeks, add 150-200 calories a day.
- Check you are actually eating what you think — tracking slips are common.
- Make sure training volume and intensity are still progressing; food alone will not build muscle.
